Ruckman Mill Farm-Susan Feller

"Thank you for visiting our website.  Please return to the Gallery of Rugs and be sure to visit all areas of the fabulous world of fiber art."

Raised in Warren County, New Jersey, Susan learned hand crafts from her grandmothter, Louise and mother, Carol. Girl Scouting taught the basic survival and independance skills which have carried through her life. In 1994, Lillian Vail taught her how to hook and her artistic talents had finally found a medium for expression. With degrees in Art and History from U Mass/ Boston, Susan's goal is to raise the recognition of this craft to the level of art by exploring design, materials, and color never forgetting the historical connection.

Since 1999, Feller and her partner, Jim Lilly have farmed on property in Hampshire County, West Virginia. The enterprise is named Ruckman Mill Farm after the rural area and the buckwheat mill on their property.

The craft of rug hooking interests Susan because of its use of the recycled materials. It is an American heritage, and the technique allowing one to "paint" with wool, creating colorful designs.

Susan and the Ruckman Mill Farm gang have been juried into the MountainMade gallery and website located in Thomas, WV. Rugs and pillows are available in the gallery space which is a treat, filled with artisans work from the mountains of West Virginia. You can visit and purchase items on www.mountainmade.com.

Susan is hooking the American Trilogy rug. This design is an autobiographical piece depicting Susan's strong interest in American History, and women's involvement in shaping the United States. Our struggle for Freedom is included with the eagle an element of the natural resources Americans must care for today for the future. Guess I got a bit preachy but why not....
